This Inevitable Ruin
Background
Floor 9 is Faction Wars, the multi-team battle for dominance of Larracos, City of Dreams — the ancient, funnel-shaped city that has loomed over the series since Book 5. Ten crawler factions compete; only one can control the city. The floor has a 30-day limit, or 90 hours after a winner is declared.
Carl arrives as Blood Sultanate Warlord with 58 soldiers, Rank #1, 6,000,000 gold bounty, and 231 septillion views. Only 32,429 crawlers remain of Earth’s original population. A 60-hour Ceasefire applies before open hostilities begin.
Named interlude sections between chapters are told from the POV of named crawlers (some previously known from the archive notes: Porthus, Tipid, Milk, Volteeg, Justice Light, Rosetta, Everly, Dante). These are no longer just archive authors — they are characters inside the floor alongside Carl and Donut.
The book has four named parts: The Ceasefire, (unnamed middle), Open Hostilities, and The Peeling of Larracos.
Major new antagonist: Harpocrates, a deity whose power threatens the entire faction war.
The Pacifist Network: An out-of-dungeon political operation run by Rosetta and orchestrated by Porthus, buying ships and moving families of crawlers to safety far from the center system. York, a tenodera creature aboard the Homecoming Queen, is the network’s field operative.
Prologue — Tempest’s Floor 8 Recap School Report
Tempest, a young Nullian girl and niece of Quasar (Carl’s attorney), is interviewing Quasar for a school report on perceptions of the crawl. She’s been assigned Carl and Donut as her subjects and has to trade plumbing repairs to get Quasar to talk. The exchange is comic and sharp — Quasar’s capsule summary of Book 6: “Carl fucked shit up. He fucked up a little in the end and now has a spider stuck in his chest.” Tempest threatens to tell her father that Quasar said he’s her real dad. Quasar: “Now we’re talking, kid. Keep saying shit like that, and you’ll get far.” He pulls his vape pen out and starts talking.
Porthus — Archive Interlude
(Before The Ceasefire)
Porthus, the crawler archive author, sits with his attorney as his hands shake while he turns a key over. He’s on the cusp of something significant. This is not Porthus documenting the dungeon from outside — he is inside the dungeon, on Floor 9, and whatever he is about to do requires a key he only just received.
Chapter 1 — Floor 9 Arrival, Soul Poisoning, Dead Shark
“Welcome, Crawler. Welcome to Faction Wars. You are on the ninth floor.” Carl and Donut materialize in a wet, stinking alleyway in Larracos. The city has been recently drained — the funnel is flooding-and-drain-cycled. 10 teams remain. 60-hour ceasefire active.
Carl immediately has a problem: Soul Poisoning from the Scavenger’s Daughter back-patch he never properly discharged after Book 6. His Emberus ring is partially blocking it, but it’s worsening. He finds a dead concierge shark in the alley, hoists it overhead, activates Daughter’s Kiss, and punches it as hard as he can. The shark vaporizes in a red stinking mist. Achievement: Sushi Smoothie! Carl and Donut are both now covered in mud and shark confetti.
Quasar’s message warns of a serious legal issue: Sensation Entertainment (the studio running the Vengeance of the Daughter storyline) has been purchased by a subsidiary of the Dream faction. They’re demanding their third season. Carl has a contractual obligation that is about to be weaponized against him.
Chapter 2 — “I Am Absolutely Not Wearing That”
Donut refuses something related to her new class equipment. Her class selection has included a ghillie suit (she asks what a ghillie suit is) and a hat, but certain components of the look conflict with her aesthetic standards. The negotiation between Donut and Mordecai about what she is willing to wear is ongoing.
Chapter 3 — Loot Boxes, Class Selection Continues
Carl and Donut open their loot boxes from Floor 8 and process the class changes. Donut is finalizing her new class. The Emberus ring keeps his tattoo manageable. Carl evaluates the political landscape of the faction war using his warlord interface.
Chapter 4 — Celestial Box, Donut’s New Class Revealed
The celestial box contains significant items. Donut has picked her new class — the one with the hat. Her faction war role and Card deck are established. The boxes settle. They have everything they’re going to have for Floor 9.
Dante — Archive Interlude
Dante reads a newsletter for the third time, exchanges a look with Justice Light, his s— (the excerpt cuts off). Dante and Justice Light are together, processing information. Justice Light, the skyfowl crawler who has been a major archive contributor, is physically present on Floor 9.
Chapter 5 — “Do You Have Garret? You Said He Died!”
Someone is desperately asking about a person named Garret who was believed dead. The emotional weight of this scene — a crawler learning whether someone they cared about survived the transition between floors — establishes that not everyone who entered Floor 9 made it.
Chapter 6 — Celestial Rewards
The celestial box opened before or during this chapter contains a pair of items significant enough to affect the tactical situation going forward.
Chapter 7 — Ceasefire Timer: 56 Hours
The ceasefire has 56 hours remaining. Carl uses the time to map Larracos, assess the faction positions, meet with allies, and build strategy. The city is massive — funnel-shaped, with different districts at different elevations. The Blood Sultanate territory is marked.
Chapter 8 — Through the College District
Moving through a section of the city near what appears to be a college or university complex. The architecture of Larracos is studied — old and layered, with signs of multiple civilizations building atop each other.
Chapter 9 — Donut Back on Louis’s Lap, Alliance Building
Donut is back in her familiar form, perched on Louis’s lap with her arm over his shoulder. The alliance structure for Faction Wars is being assembled. Louis and some of the surviving crawlers from previous floors are integrated into the Blood Sultanate army structure.
Chapter 10 — The Desperado Club, Clarabelle Again
“Clarabelle! I thought—” Carl arrives at the Desperado Club, encountering Clarabelle the gatekeeper who has seen too much. The club is a neutral zone during the ceasefire and serves as the primary hub for inter-faction information exchange, black market transactions, and hiring of mercenaries and NPCs.
Chapter 11 — Louis Leaves His New Wife
Louis has gotten married to someone on the previous floor. He leaves her behind as he, Katia, and Bautista depart for the next phase. This small detail — that human lives continue and accumulate even in the dungeon — is the series in miniature.
Tipid — Archive Interlude
“Can I keep this?” Tipid asked his attorney. His hands shook as he turned the key over. Tipid is a crawler and archive contributor who has received something important — a key, similar to what Porthus holds. Multiple crawlers are participating in whatever Porthus’s plan involves.
Rosetta — Chat Interlude
: Don’t say anything out loud. They’re still listening. Do you still have the credit—
Rosetta is operating through secure chat, coordinating something delicate that cannot be spoken aloud. She is the coordinator of the Pacifist Network — the out-of-dungeon operation to evacuate families of dungeon crawlers to safety.
Porthus — Archive Note
Second Porthus entry: “Hu. Author of the second edition of the cookbook. The first crawler to receive the item—” Porthus is documenting his own involvement in something. The “it” he received — the first one to receive it — is connected to the Pacifist Network’s plan.
Tipid — Chat Interlude
: This is for you. This is what you built.
Tipid receives something that represents everything they’ve worked for. The emotional weight of this moment — something was built over the course of many floors and many seasons — lands.
Chapter 12 — Ikicha’s Note
[By crawler Ikicha, 11th Edition]: A crawler archive entry from Ikicha, now presumably present on Floor 9, documenting what they’re seeing from inside the dungeon rather than from the retrospective archive format.
Chapter 13 — Tina and Mongo
Tina grunts at Mongo. The human-dinosaur communication dynamic provides a brief character moment.
Chapter 14 — Triggering Conditions
Carl reviews and sets up trap triggering conditions. The dungeon’s sapper/trap mechanic is being applied to Faction Wars territory defense.
Chapter 15 — “I Never Thought I’d See One of These Again”
Carl recognizes something from a previous floor or from his pre-dungeon knowledge. The recognition comes with strategic implications.
Everly — Archive Interlude
“You,” Everly hissed, pointing her leg at one of her two remaining mercenaries. He was— Everly, a crawler who has been referenced in the archive notes since Book 4 (and whose entries ended tragically), is here. She has two mercenaries remaining, and something has gone very wrong. The “pointing her leg” detail suggests Everly is not a standard humanoid race.
Chapter 16 — Katia at the Hospital, Mordecai Pacing
“Okay,” Mordecai said as Katia sat nervously on the hospital cot. Carl paced. The Crown of the Sepsis Whore on Katia’s head — placed there in Book 5 — is the subject of an urgent medical and strategic discussion. The crown has implications for Floor 9 that they need to address before the ceasefire ends.
Chapter 17 — “The Scavenger’s Daughter Has Been Fed. Unleash Her Wrath.”
Major event. The Scavenger’s Daughter — the powerful entity connected to Carl’s back-patch and the tattoo on his chest — is fed and activated. The consequences of this activation are significant and immediate.
Chapter 18 — Official Field Ruling Adjudication
“THIS IS AN OFFICIAL FIELD RULING ADJUDICATION” — the dungeon’s legal/adjudication system intervenes in something Carl has done. The Syndicate’s Orren (the liaison) is involved in this process.
Chapter 19 — Panford’s Briefing
Someone named Panford brings Carl back to attention. Panford is briefing him about something he needs to focus on. Carl’s mind is elsewhere, but the current situation demands it.
Christmas Morning — Named Section
The crawlers experience something that resembles a gift-giving or revelation moment. The title “Christmas Morning” is ironic given the dungeon context — whatever gift arrives, it is both wanted and dangerous.
The Ramp-Up — Named Section
The ceasefire is ending. The pace of events accelerates. All the preparations, alliances, and plans are being finalized before open hostilities begin.
Justice Light — Archive Interlude
Justice Light has been constructing a trap system in the underground tunnels of Larracos, assisted by the sluggalo soldiers. He dismisses them before the final phase begins — he wants them above ground where they can fight, not underground where they might miss the action. He tells them: “Operation Ruin will start the moment the timer ends.” Justice Light, who loves puzzles and who has lost his children, works alone in the dark with his traps, ready for the last defense. He has one wing.
Chapter 20 — Justice Light’s Archive Entry
[By Crawler Justice Light, Eighth Edition]: Justice Light documents what he is about to do, leaving a record. If he doesn’t survive, the archive should know what he built down here and why.
Chapter 21 — Artillery at the Southern Front
Artillery starts pounding the Blood Sultanate’s southern defenses just as Carl and his team arrive. The ceasefire has ended. Faction Wars is live.
Chapter 22 — “The Leeches Are in Place”
“THE LEECHES ARE IN PLACE” — a military operation is underway. Carl’s forces have pre-positioned a specialized asset (leeches in a tactical context) that is now active.
Chapter 23 — Creating Confusion
Carl executes a confusion-and-fear tactic. “If you want to create fright amongst an otherwise stalwart enemy, confusion is always—” The philosophy of psychological warfare applied to dungeon combat.
Chapter 24 — Smoke and Music
Carl can’t see more than two or three feet in front of him. Music blares painfully. The combination of smoke cover and Carl’s trap-based warfare is in full effect.
Chapter 25 — “It’s Working. They’re Running.”
“CARL, CARL GET UP. IT’S WORKING. THEY’RE RUNNING.” The tactic has succeeded. The first major military engagement of the Faction Wars goes to the Blood Sultanate side.
Milk — Archive Interlude
Milk awakens in her hidden room deep inside the Desperado Club to the sound of screaming. She has been in hibernation — Milk is a creature that goes dormant between active periods. Her guild (calligraphy and cartography) has been undisturbed for 50 seasons. Nobody enters. She’s been surviving on sustenance pellets. She awakens to demon-stink under her door, a siren, mantaur guards being killed in the hallway. She hears “Prepotente Lorenzo De La Rosa! Stop that this instant!” — the Prepotente/Corky/Porky family is apparently involved in whatever just burst through. Milk has been here the entire time. She’s been here waiting.
Chapter 26 — The Throne Room for the Prism
Carl arrives at the Throne Room where the Prism is located. The Prism appears to be a significant dungeon object connected to the Faction Wars mechanics.
Chapter 27 — Intelligence Flash
A burst of tactical intelligence reaches Carl’s interface simultaneously with several notifications. He has a moment to process before—
Chapter 28 — “Don’t Get Used to It”
“Don’t get used to it,” Donut grumbled as they stepped out of the throne room. Her Constitution has dropped. Something happened inside that had physical costs.
Chapter 29 — Moving Toyotomi
Toyotomi — a very heavy entity — is being transported. The logistics of moving something this massive through a dungeon city are considerable.
Priestly — Archive Note
[By Crawler Priestly, 14th edition]: Priestly’s entry, from a crawler who appeared in earlier archive notes. A documentation of events from the floor, seen from Priestly’s position.
Chapter 30 — “We’d Deliberately Placed”
Something has been deliberately positioned as part of Carl’s overall strategy. The placement is paying off.
Chapter 31 — “We’d Deliberately Placed” (continues)
The deliberate placement from the previous chapter’s setup is now in action.
Chapter 32 — “Destroy the Bait Shop. Now.”
“You need to destroy the bait shop,” Mordecai said. “And you need to do it now. They can’t—” Mordecai is issuing an urgent tactical order. Whatever the bait shop represents in dungeon mechanics, its continued existence is a strategic liability.
Chapter 33 — The Stablemaster’s Last Words
The grizzled former stablemaster of the high elf castle grunts one last time as Donut does something significant. An NPC who has been a fixture says or does something final.
Chapter 34 — Into the Bubble
Carl tries to send a quick message to Donut but discovers the no-chat-in-the-bubble rule applies. A specific zone or mechanic has restricted communication. He’s operating alone.
Volteeg — Archive Interlude
Volteeg does not consider himself worthy of love. He was once a pet bird — a parrot or similar creature — belonging to Mistress Henspar, who loved him completely. She would secretly sneak berries to him in the market under her jacket, calling it their little secret. He would sing for her. When he stood over her body, screaming, trying to protect her from the scags that killed her, he understood he had never deserved her love. He ate a pet biscuit that gave him intelligence. He chose the gargoyle race on Floor 3, which gave him more. Mistress Henspar died on Floor 7. He is angry now, but no longer afraid. He cannot sing anymore in the gargoyle form. That was a mistake he can’t take back. He carries the weight of her death and his insufficient protection of her as the defining fact of his existence.
Chapter 35 — Smoke Mantle, Enemy Surge
Carl deploys a smoke mantle as enemy troops surge forward. Brief window of tactical opportunity.
Chapter 36 — Carl Faces Orren
Carl is in a chair. Across from him sits Orren, the Syndicate liaison — the fishbowl-headed creature who represents the AI systems running the dungeon. This is not a routine meeting.
Chapter 37 — Orren Deflates
“ORREN SEEMED TO DEFLATE.” The liaison’s characteristic stress response fails him. Something Carl has said or done has hit him very hard.
Chapter 38 — Orren’s Uncertain Hands
Without his stress ball, Orren’s hands don’t know what to do. The negotiation is deeply uncomfortable for the liaison.
Chapter 39 — “Did You Help Break the AI?”
“Orren said after a few moments. ‘Is that what you did? You helped break the AI from itself—’” This is the pivotal question of the Orren meeting. Carl has, somehow, interfered with or influenced the dungeon’s AI systems, and Orren is confronting him about it. Carl’s answer matters enormously.
Chapter 40 — Castle Reports, Samantha’s Update
“THE NEW WALL IS COMING ALONG NICELY. ALSO, WE PAINTED THE CASTLE PINK. JAMAL BROKE HI—” Samantha’s operational report from Carl’s castle. The castle has been painted pink. Jamal (the shark) has broken something. The castle defense is active and being managed by Samantha in Carl’s absence.
Chapter 41 — Room Ambush, Menus Off
Donut yowls as they land in a room. All menus snap off. Ears pop. A restricted zone or anti-magic field is active.
Chapter 42 — Drakea’s Archive Note
[By Crawler Drakea, 22]: Drakea’s note, one of the later-edition archive authors who has been tracking events across multiple floors.
Chapter 43 — Standoff
Everyone is waiting for something else to happen. Nothing does. The tension of a standoff between forces where neither side moves.
Chapter 44 — “Can Someone Explain Who That Was?”
“Can someone explain to the new kids who that was supposed to be?” Donut asked the room. A figure has appeared or referenced something that the veteran crawlers recognize but the newer ones don’t.
Chapter 45 — Transfer to the Saferoom
Carl has a plan for the moment of transfer. He was sent to the saferoom, which is part of the plan rather than a retreat.
Chapter 46 — The Sepsis Whore Problem
“To save Donut and Katia from the Sepsis Whore issue, we first had to kill the entire lin—” The Crown of the Sepsis Whore on Katia’s head requires eliminating the entire Blood Sultanate lineage to break its hold. This is a recursive problem: Carl and Donut are the Blood Sultanate. The solution is complicated.
Chapter 47 — Sluggalos Spotted
“Uh, I see the sluggalos. They’re about a mile north of the castle. They have one of the—” The sluggalo army is in position.
Chapter 48 — Hellspawn Landing
Someone on a hellspawn lands in front of Carl and the group, crunching on the hard ground. A dramatic entrance.
Chapter 49 — First-Time Deity Worship
“Something strange happens when someone worships a deity for the first time.” A new worship relationship is formed, with the characteristic strangeness that the series has always ascribed to taking on a god’s burden. Carl’s own Emberus commitment is a reference point.
Chapter 50 — Throne Room Occupied
“A member of your army is occupying the throne room of the Blood Sultanate stronghold!” Someone from Carl’s forces has moved into the Blood Sultanate’s central location.
Chapter 51 — Four Mantaurs Burst In
Four mantaurs burst through a door. This is the Corky/Porky/Grigori faction, which has been part of Carl’s extended family since Book 8.
Chapter 52 — Mordecai’s Warning, the Capacitor Wire
Carl doesn’t remove the wire from his wrist. He keeps thinking of Mordecai’s warning. The capacitor wire is a specific item that has dangerous properties.
Chapter 53 — The Door Slams, Wire Snaps
The door slams on its own. The capacitor wire is cut by the portal mechanism. The sequence is tense and the result is significant.
Chapter 54 — Allister’s Archive Note
[By Crawler Allister, 13th Edition]: Allister’s documentation, continuing the in-dungeon archive tradition.
Chapter 55 — Alarm Trap Recipe Update, Justice Light Edition
Two notes: an update to the alarm trap recipe based on Justice Light’s latest edition. The cookbook’s living nature — updated by current crawlers in real time — is demonstrated.
Open Hostilities — Section III
The third phase of the Faction Wars begins.
Justice Light — Second Interlude
Justice Light is in his tunnel, receiving battle reports via chat. The Dreamer faction is attacking. “How many?” “I think it’s all of them.” Justice Light: “That’s too many. Chop ‘em up a little first for me, Rosie. Get ‘em down to under 3,000, then we can let them in. I will welcome any and all guests into my lair.” He is inviting thousands of enemies into his trap network, deliberately, as the final defense. He will welcome the Reaver faction but will accept whoever comes. A distant soundless flash: The Feral God Meatus has entered the realm. This deity is too distant for Carl’s Scavenger’s Daughter to activate.
Chapter 56 — The Bone Clan
The Bone Clan occupies spots 1 and 2 in the faction war’s territorial layout. Carl is assessing the faction positions.
Chapter 57 — Walking with Li Jun and Zhang
Carl is moving with Li Jun and Zhang toward a saferoom entrance. They have business to attend to before the next phase.
Chapter 58 — A New Member of the Princess Posse
Someone — without armor, looking vulnerable — stands before Carl and is now ostensibly a member of the Princess Posse. The phrasing “ostensibly” suggests the membership is tactical rather than genuine.
Chapter 59 — Operation: Ruin
“Operation: Ruin consists of four separate offensives, followed by what Donut calls the—” The master plan is revealed. Carl’s comprehensive strategy for winning the Faction Wars uses four coordinated attacks, each targeting a different faction simultaneously.
Chapter 60 — “Do NOT Use Your PA While Harpocrates Is Out!”
“Donut, do NOT use your PA while Harpocrates is out!” Harpocrates — a deity — has emerged into active play. The PA (public address system, one of Donut’s signature tools) would be catastrophic to use in his presence.
Chapter 61 — “The Mountain Exploded”
“THE MOUNTAIN EXPLODED” — a large-scale detonation of geologic significance. Carl’s trademark large-scale explosives, applied to Larracos’s terrain.
Chapter 62 — Elle Wakes, Samantha Stays
Elle groans as she wakes from unconsciousness. Samantha has stayed behind with Carl, moving with him as they continue the operation.
Chapter 63 — Territory of the Madness
Carl is in or near the territory of the Madness faction. Navigating enemy territory while managing multiple simultaneous operations.
Chapter 64 — Samantha Directing Movement
“Samantha start moving, kid! Angle toward the castle, but not too close yet!” Someone is giving Samantha instructions while she ferries people or positions herself.
Chapter 65 — Scream Warriors Arrive
Scream Warriors teleport into place in the woods behind Carl’s forces. A new type of combatant enters the battle.
Chapter 66 — “Tell Us Everything About This Ritual”
“Tell us everything about this goddamned ritual thing.” Carl demands information about a specific ritual that is central to whatever Harpocrates’s plan involves.
Chapter 67 — Harpocrates Follows
“Flesh flop-rolled over the fields, and Harpocrates followed.” The god Harpocrates is in direct pursuit. The description of what precedes him suggests devastating damage to the battlefield.
Chapter 68 — The Final Mercenary
“The final mercenary crashed against the wall after getting brained by Dong.” Dong (the half-mantaur) is still fighting. The last enemy mercenary is down.
The Peeling of Larracos — Section IV
The final phase: the peeling of the city itself. Whatever happens in this section changes Larracos permanently.
Several Days Earlier — Katia’s Dream
A flashback from Katia’s perspective. Carl, in taking potions, accidentally entered Katia’s dream. He glimpsed inner lives he was never meant to see: Mordecai’s “deep, bottomless well of sadness.” Rosetta’s “tired rage.” Edgar the tortoise suddenly remembering things from his hundreds of past lives. Bucket Boy the crocodilian NPC wondering why he doesn’t remember things the other strippers remember, and the shame he feels. And Imani — Carl saw everything. She fled Detroit, her siblings blame her for leaving the family. She found peace in a small town and carries overwhelming guilt about it. She is in love with Chris, and Carl had no idea. He feels the privacy violation intensely: he invaded her mind without consent, saw her naked in the most intimate possible sense, and can’t take it back. His only solace is that he will forget most of it when he wakes. Donut was thankfully not in the room for this.
Rosetta — Extended Chat Interlude
Rosetta: the Pacifist Network’s primary coordinator. She and Porthus have been running an out-of-dungeon operation for years. Baroness Victory (the dungeon’s adjutant) has been a collaborator — not to cheat, but to facilitate: she confirms that funds have reached their destination, that two ships have been purchased in the chaos of the Naga system.
York, the captain of the Homecoming Queen, was supposed to shoot down a yacht containing Stalwart’s children (orc children, including the new king of the Skull Empire) in exchange for a PIN number — the price of the deal with Stalwart’s faction.
Rosetta feels ill about this, but her primary mission is complete regardless: the Pacifist Network has bought the generation ships and the families of crawlers will escape to the Impetus Point — the furthest known point in the galaxy — and wait out the inevitable wars.
Porthus orchestrated this entire operation before the dungeon began. He was always a few steps ahead of everyone else.
Chapter 69 — Team Retribution’s Castle
“Team Retribution (castle occupied by War Mage Rebellion forces)” — Akuma’s War Mage Rebellion has taken the Team Retribution castle. The faction positions are shifting.
Chapter 70 — Carl Bursts into the Saferoom
Carl bursts into the saferoom. Whatever just happened required an emergency retreat to neutral ground.
Chapter 71 — The Past Few Months Summary
“OVER THE PAST FEW MONTHS” — a summation of events that have accumulated. The scope of what has been happening in and around the dungeon over this extended period is laid out.
Chapter 72 — Pink Glow Around Lucia’s Dot
A pink glow appears around Lucia’s dot on the map. Something has changed about Lucia Mar — perhaps a status effect, faction allegiance shift, or dungeon mechanic activation.
Chapter 73 — The Dictionary
There’s a dictionary in the main room of the guildhall. Carl is looking something up, or referencing it, or it’s significant for reasons that will become clear.
Chapter 74 — The Tattoo Plan
“It’s gotta be a tattoo, and Milk here is going to etch words of power—” Rosetta has a plan involving Milk etching magical words. The tattoo mechanic — which has been central to Carl’s story since Book 4 — is being applied in a new context.
Chapter 75 — Donut Didn’t Even Look
“DONUT DIDN’T EVEN LOOK” — Donut is so focused on something else that she doesn’t react to something Carl would expect her to notice. Her attention is entirely on whatever she’s doing.
Chapter 76 — “Warlord Princess Donut Has Committed a Third Atrocity”
“System Message: Warlord Princess Donut has committed a third Atrocity.” Three Atrocities is a dungeon threshold with specific consequences. Donut has now crossed it. Whatever she did, she did it deliberately and for a reason.
Chapter 77 — Meatus Destroyed
“Meatus hasn’t exactly left the realm. He’s now slap-chopped all over the realm.” The Feral God Meatus — who entered the realm during the Open Hostilities section — has been obliterated. Not banished, not defeated: atomized across the entire realm. Whoever or whatever did this used an extraordinary amount of force.
Chapter 78 — The Wrecked Semeru Castle
Carl is before “the absolutely wrecked castle of the Semeru, who’d built it as a capstone against—” The Semeru faction’s castle, which was built as a defensive capstone, is now destroyed.
Chapter 79 — Samantha’s Castle Report
“ARE YOU GUYS COMING OR NOT? THIS CASTLE IS SPOOKY. ALSO, IT STILL COUNTS AS ME SAVING—” Samantha is in the castle, doing something, reporting back. She is claiming credit for something she did.
Chapter 80 — “How Is She Going to Get Him Out?”
“In a room like that, how is she going to get him out?” Donut asks. Someone is trapped inside a room with specific properties that make extraction difficult.
Chapter 81 — The Transport Rolls
“THE TRANSPORT HAD ROLLED” — a vehicle in motion, carrying something or someone important.
Chapter 82 — Unfamiliar Saferoom
The transport stopped at a saferoom entrance Carl has never used before. This is new territory.
Chapter 83 — The Louis Problem
“We have about an hour left to figure out the issue with Louis before the soldiers take—” Louis has a problem — perhaps a debuff, a trapped state, or a faction war mechanic — that requires resolution within 60 minutes before it becomes unmanageable.
Chapter 84 — “Until the Destruction of the 9th…”
“Until the destruction of the 9—” A countdown or condition. Something related to the 9th faction or the 9th element of a system.
Chapter 85 — The Countdown Continues
The same condition repeated. The threshold is still not met.
Chapter 86 — Third Iteration
The condition appears for the third time, as if the dungeon is hammering the point: this thing has not happened yet.
Chapter 87 — “Bring Me Back! Bring Me Back!”
“SHE’S NOT TOUCHING ME ANYMORE. BRING ME BACK! BRING ME BACK!” The final chapter. Someone — whose connection with Carl has been severed — is screaming to be returned. The Scavenger’s Daughter or the Bedlam Bride tattoo entity has stopped its contact, and whoever is experiencing the separation is in anguish.
Epilogue — York on the Homecoming Queen
York, a tenodera creature (insect-like being), is alone on the Homecoming Queen — a massive ship in orbit. His mandibles are stained. He is a poet who broadcasts verse over open channels until someone in authority tells him to stop, and then starts again. He floats in zero-gravity in the storage hold with his eyes closed. He composes three-beats about his hive — killed by the Syndicate before the dungeon began. He expected to be shot at by now for completing his mission (shooting down the orc yacht, killing the new Skull Empire king). Nobody has tried.
He does not know if he still feels things, or if he is only performing the shape of feeling for an audience that is not watching.
“My duty is done. I have killed those I have been ordered to kill. The blood on my mandibles will never wash away.” He crumples the verse and puts it in the recycler.
What This Book Does
This Inevitable Ruin is the Faction Wars book — the payoff for the Blood Sultanate tiara that Donut put on in Book 1 and that has been ticking like a bomb ever since. The answer to “will Carl leave Donut before Floor 9” is: no, obviously. What happens instead is the entire weight of what that choice costs, and who pays it.
The book also reveals that the dungeon was never just a show. The crawler archive authors who have been providing notes between chapters since Book 4 — Porthus, Tipid, Justice Light, Rosetta, Milk, Volteeg, Everly — are all present, all operating, all part of a larger plan that Porthus set in motion before the dungeon even began. Volteeg, who cannot sing anymore because he chose the wrong race and can never go back, is the book’s thesis in miniature: you can’t unknow the universe, you can’t unbite the shopkeeper, and you can’t undo the thing that changed everything. You just carry it forward and try to be worthy of the love that was given to you when you weren’t.
York’s epilogue suggests that there are people — beings — outside the dungeon who have done terrible things for reasons that seemed sufficient at the time, and who are now alone with what they did.
