Matt Dinniman Dungeon Crawler Carl #6 June 2023

sci-filitrpgdungeon crawler carl

Background

Floor 8 is called The Ghosts of Earth and is set in a Caribbean/Cuban environment — the dungeon’s reconstruction of the Florida Keys, Cuba, and surrounding ocean. The central location is Larracos, a walled city-state. The floor culminates in Faction Wars, an event where NPC-sponsored factions fight for dominance of the city, with crawlers conscripted into the conflict.

New mechanics introduced: Totem cards (crawlers collect a deck of monster/character cards that can be deployed in battle), Phase Two (a second stage of the floor that activates partway through the countdown), and the card game combat system used in the floor’s final boss fight.

New characters: Samantha — a floating disembodied head who can fly, carry people short distances, enter small spaces, and squeal with delight at increasingly inappropriate moments. She becomes one of Carl’s most useful companions. Bomo — in Mordecai’s safe room. Paz, Anton, Sister Ines — NPC-adjacent crawlers. Pater Coal — a small NPC cleric. Yasmine — a Level 75 Wisp secretary at Club Vanquisher. Amayon — a demon lord enslaved by the floor’s goddess.

Ongoing: Katia, Hekla, Elle, Imani, Li Jun, Li Na, Louis, Bautista, Juice Box, Mordecai. Quan continues as an antagonist with his celestial-tier flying robe.

Spoiler: Katia acquires the Crown of the Sepsis Whore on this floor — her equivalent of Donut’s Blood Sultanate tiara, with identical implications for Floor 9.

Chapter 1 (Prologue) — Level Collapse Is Imminent

A brief flash-forward: the floor is at its end, the collapse is happening, and decisions are being made in crisis. The prologue shows a glimpse of what’s at stake before rewinding to the beginning.

Chapter 1 — Floor 8, The Ghosts of Earth

“Crawler to the eighth floor. ‘The Ghosts of Earth.’” Carl and Donut arrive on Floor 8. The environment is immediately recognizable as Earth, specifically the Caribbean — tropical architecture, palm trees, familiar sounds, but populated by dungeon monsters and NPCs of species that have nothing to do with Cuba. The dissonance is specific and uncomfortable.

Chapter 2 — Saferoom with Bomo, Mordecai’s Briefing

In the safe room, Mordecai sits at the counter with Bomo (a new entity). Mordecai briefs them on Floor 8. The floor is structured around the city of Larracos, which functions as a dungeon city-state with its own history, politics, and factions. The card mechanic is introduced: Mordecai explains how totem collection and deck-building work.

Chapter 3 — A Deep Breath, Planning

Carl takes a deep breath. He’s been doing this since Floor 1 — assessing, planning, identifying the exploitable gap between what the dungeon thinks it’s set up and what it’s actually set up. Floor 8 will not be different. It will just be bigger and more complicated.

Chapter 4 — Monsters Collected, 0 of 6

“Monsters Collected. 0 of 6.” The floor’s monster-collection mechanic is active. Six specific creature types need to be encountered and either defeated in a particular way or acquired as totem cards. This is in addition to the regular dungeon clearing.

Chapter 5 — First Encounter, Recognizing Carl

Crawlers stop dead when they finally realize who Carl and Donut are. On Floor 8, Carl and Donut’s reputation precedes them significantly. Being instantly recognizable is both an asset (people want to ally with them) and a problem (enemies know exactly who they’re targeting).

Chapter 6 — Pun-Based Naming, the Group Treks

“Not a fan of pun-based naming conventions, Carl.” Donut criticizes the names of something — monsters, locations, or an NPC’s business — as the five-person group treks across the floor’s terrain. The group at this stage includes Carl, Donut, Katia, and others from the previous floor.

Chapter 7 — Geraldo the Monk Seal, Totem Card #1

After adding Geraldo the monk seal as their first squad member, the group abandons one approach and pivots. Geraldo is the first totem card acquired and the most emotionally significant, because he’s a seal and Donut has immediate opinions about a seal being on their team.

Chapter 8 — Recap Redacted, Group Attack

Part of the recap episode is redacted. They watch a group of crawlers get attacked and killed in ways the galaxy apparently found too disturbing for broadcast. The floor’s danger level is higher than anything previously encountered.

Chapter 9 — Assault Begins December 24

“Assault begins December 24.” A timed event: something significant happens on Christmas Eve. Carl doesn’t know yet if this is for them or against them. He marks the date and plans around it.

Chapter 10 — “We Did It Three Times”

“We did it three times.” A tactic or approach that has worked multiple times now. The repetition is notable — the dungeon doesn’t usually let the same trick work repeatedly. Carl identifies this as a pattern to be careful about.

Chapter 11 — Red-Tagged NPC Boss in the Saferoom

Carl invited a red-tagged NPC boss into a saferoom, and the boss actually got inside. This violates the safe room’s fundamental rules. The boss remains in the room, which means either the rules have exceptions or Carl has found one. Neither option is comfortable.

Chapter 12 — Space Station to Underwater

Transferred to the space station before being zapped down to the underwater area. The floor’s geography involves multiple biomes accessible via transit points — the space station serves as a hub for getting between locations that don’t connect terrestrially.

Chapter 13 — Crawler Note: Milk, 6th Edition

Note added by Crawler Milk, 6th Edition: Milk’s notes are scattered throughout several books; this is an early entry. Milk focuses on dungeon infrastructure — stairwells, portals, transit systems — and provides technical information about how the dungeon’s physical rules work.

Chapter 14 — Paz and Sister Ines, Armored Figure

Carl speaks to Paz, Anton, and Sister Ines as they stare open-mouthed up at an armored figure. The figure is significant — a high-level NPC or entity whose presence explains something about the floor’s power structure.

Chapter 15 — Crawler Carl, 25th Edition

Note added by Crawler Carl, 25th Edition: A note written by Carl himself — from a future edition of the crawl, decades or seasons ahead. It is addressed to future crawlers. What it says reveals something about what Carl survives, what he learns, and what he chooses to warn others about. This is the first time Carl’s own voice appears in the archive documentation.

Chapter 16 — Crawler Tipid, 4th Edition

Note added by Crawler Tipid, 4th Edition: Advice from an early-edition crawler about an aspect of the Larracos environment that caught Tipid’s group off guard. Technical dungeon information filtered through the perspective of someone who has been through it and survived.

Chapter 17 — Backing Away from the First Goddess

“Did you know that was going to happen?” Carl and company back away from the form of the first goddess to appear in their immediate vicinity. The deities of this floor are active participants in its events — not just distant powers but entities who show up and affect the local situation.

Chapter 18 — Heading into Club Vanquisher

“Mordecai, hey, so I’m headed into Club Vanquisher right now. Donut will catch you up.” Club Vanquisher is a significant location in Larracos: a temple/nightclub complex with its own security, its own politics, and access to the floor’s quest infrastructure. Pater Coal, a tiny cleric, is their primary NPC contact here.

Chapter 19 — Something Appears on Katia’s Head

Something comes into existence on Katia’s head. Katia looks at Carl. Carl looks at Katia. The Crown of the Sepsis Whore has appeared — the floor’s equivalent of Donut’s Blood Sultanate tiara. Katia now has the same Floor 9 problem that Donut has. She handles the news with remarkable composure for someone who has just had a faction-aligning crown materialize on her skull.

Chapter 20 — Three of Six Totems Collected

“Three of Six Totems Collected.” Halfway. The totem collection mission is advancing. Each totem adds a card to the deck and potentially a squad member with unique abilities.

Chapter 21 — Crawler Herot, 16th Edition

Note added by Crawler Herot, 16th Edition: Herot’s entries tend toward observation of the dungeon’s evolving AI behavior — how it adapts, how it responds to player input, and how its unpredictability increases on higher floors. “The more unstable the AI becomes, the less predictable it is. Yet at the same time, it’s even more predictable in certain ways.”

Chapter 22 — Hi, Juice Box!

“Hi, Juice Box! I’ll tell Louis we saw you!” Juice Box is present on Floor 8 as well. The returning cast of crawlers continues to expand and persist. Brief reconnection with a face from Floor 5.

Chapter 23 — Looking Over His Shoulder

A quick glance over his shoulder to make certain no fellow crawlers are watching. Carl is doing something that he’d prefer the dungeon broadcast not capture, or that other crawlers not observe. His plans have layers that don’t survive transparency.

Chapter 24 — The Naga Voice, Dark Room

“It was just a dark room with that weird, naga voice. I never saw him. He asked me if…” Someone reports their encounter with an unseen naga NPC. The naga’s presence in this floor’s power structure is unusual and concerning.

Chapter 25 — Donut Whispers

Donut whispered after a minute. Whatever she’s witnessed or just been told, she’s processing it quietly. Donut does not whisper often. When she does, it means something has reached past the theatrical exterior to whatever she actually keeps underneath it.

Chapter 26 — Crawler Azin, 17th Edition

Note added by Crawler Azin, 17th Edition: Azin’s notes cover a specific danger the group will face imminently. Azin has a practical voice — the kind of person who documented their experiences precisely because they intended to survive and found it useful to keep records.

Chapter 27 — Phase Two Countdown, 40 Hours

“Time until Phase Two. 40 hours.” The floor’s second phase activates 40 hours from now. Mordecai has been warning them about Phase Two, and Carl has been preparing, but the specific mechanism by which it changes the floor is something they’ll have to experience to fully understand.

Chapter 28 — She Has a Nasty Debuff, Drug Den

“She’s okay, but she has a nasty debuff. She found some secret room called a drug den.” One of the group’s crawlers — possibly Katia — has picked up a significant negative status effect from a secret area. Drug dens in the dungeon are quest-accessible but carry substantial risk alongside their rewards.

Chapter 29 — Strike Against the Deckmaster

“Strike a single blow against the deckmaster.” A quest objective. The card mechanic’s primary antagonist — a deckmaster NPC — must be hit once. Not defeated, just struck. This is the dungeon’s way of establishing that a more complete confrontation is coming.

Chapter 30 — Phase Two Countdown

“Time until Phase Two.” The timer continues. Carl is in position and has his preparations made. Whatever Phase Two means for the floor, he’s planning to use it rather than just endure it.

Chapter 31 — Crawler Rosetta, 9th Edition

Note added by Crawler Rosetta, 9th Edition: Rosetta’s entry is angry and sad. It describes the end of Faction Wars in a previous edition — the victors celebrating while the survivors watched from outside a glass portal, unable to follow. An orc reaches back through, lassos a crawler who tried to intervene, and cuts them in half. “Tonight, I will dream of watching them burn. Tonight, I will pretend I was smart enough to find a way to lance them from afar. Comrades, I hope you help me realize my dream one day.” This is the longest and most emotionally heavy crawler note so far.

Chapter 32 — After Securing the Second Wall

After securing the second wall, the defensive architecture Carl has been building around the stairwell area is nearly complete. The floor’s countdown is approaching its final phase, and Carl’s preparations are shifting from offense to extraction logistics.

Chapter 33 — “The Mark Is Dead, My Little Sweets”

“The mark is dead, my little sweets. Excellent, excellent work. We are stronger because of your efforts.” A NPC or entity speaks this way — warm, dangerous, complimentary in a manner that sounds like praise from something you should not trust. A significant target has been eliminated.

Chapter 34 — Crawler Ossie, 18th Edition

Note added by Crawler Ossie, 18th Edition: Technical advice about the floor’s card combat system, specifically regarding how to counter the Vinegar Bitch’s deck-drain mechanic if she appears in the final confrontation.

Chapter 35 — Odette’s Surprise

Odette laughed: “in a day filled with surprises, that was a, how do you say? A dessert.” Odette has returned — she was a crawler Carl briefly encountered on Floor 1. She is present on Floor 8 as well, and her reappearance is significant. She has information and connections Carl needs.

Chapter 36 — Carl Takes a Deep Breath

Carl takes a deep breath. Something has been revealed, agreed to, or decided that is going to cost something. He breathes and proceeds.

Chapter 37 — All Crawlers Being Teleported

“As we speak, all the crawlers in the dungeon are being teleported to a…” Odette begins to explain. A floor-wide event is initiating — all crawlers on Floor 8 are being moved simultaneously. This is Phase Two.

Chapter 38 — Entering Monroe County

“Entering Monroe County.” The dungeon’s geographic labeling system reasserts itself — Monroe County, Florida. The Florida Keys environment is now active. The floor’s geography has expanded or shifted, and they’re in a new zone.

Chapter 39 — Fighting for Token Six

Until they were fighting for token number six did they actually have to use Donut’s deck. The six-totem collection is nearly complete. The final totem requires deploying the deck in combat.

Chapter 40 — Saferoom in a Shrimp Restaurant

Hiking to the saferoom within a small, side-of-the-road shrimp restaurant. The dungeon’s sense of humor about Earth’s roadside culture is consistent. The safe room is functional regardless of the restaurant’s ambiance.

Chapter 41 — Entering Dallas County

“Entering Dallas County.” The floor’s geography continues to shift. Dallas County, Texas — the dungeon is now placing crawlers in a completely different part of the US. The floor-wide teleportation event has spread the population across a much larger area of reconstructed Earth.

Chapter 42 — Crawler Drakea, 22nd Edition

Note added by Crawler Drakea, 22nd Edition: Drakea’s notes always carry a sense of having survived something that they’re not sure anyone else has managed. This entry covers the final stages of Phase Two and what crawlers should prioritize.

Chapter 43 — Donut Wakes Carl

“I feel you’ve been asleep quite long enough,” Donut says as Carl groggy sits up. Carl has been unconscious — either from injuries, potion effects, or a forced-rest mechanic. Donut has been managing while he was out.

Chapter 44 — Things Are Exactly What They Seem

“Things are exactly what they seem to be.” A moment of unusual clarity — one of those rare dungeon revelations where the threat is exactly what it appears to be, no hidden layer. Carl’s instinct is to distrust this, and then to accept it, and then to be prepared for the other shoe.

Chapter 45 — There He Was, in the Living Room

“There he was. Right there in the living room.” Someone Carl knows — from Earth, from before — is in the dungeon. The dissonance of finding a recognizable person in the dungeon’s reconstructed Earth setting is handled in the chapter.

Chapter 46 — Crawler Milk, 6th Edition (Second Entry)

Note added by Crawler Milk, 6th Edition: Milk’s follow-up entry — additional technical documentation about how the floor’s specific mechanics interact with the standard dungeon rules.

Chapter 47 — Bea’s Mother

“You know it was Miss Beatrice’s mother and not the pitbull lady?” Someone is asking Carl how he knew the distinction. Bea’s mother is present on the floor — or her presence has registered through an event. This is the first time Bea’s family has appeared in the narrative.

Chapter 48 — Animals in Florida, No Preexisting Mobs

Animals everywhere in Florida, but no preexisting mobs. The dungeon’s Florida reconstruction is ecologically accurate — the local fauna (alligators, various birds, sea life) is present but not combat-classified. It has its own dynamics that don’t fit neatly into the dungeon’s red-dot system.

Chapter 49 — Carl Opens the Benefactor Box Alone

Carl doesn’t tell Donut or anyone else about the benefactor box. He wants to see what it is first privately. The benefactor box opens to reveal a crumpled flyer for a homeless shelter in Homestead, Florida. Just a single piece of paper. Carl pushes it aside. He doesn’t know yet what it means. He will.

Chapter 50 — Crawler Drakea, Second Entry

Note added by Crawler Drakea, 22nd Edition (second entry): Drakea’s update on how the situation has evolved since the previous note. The tone is grimmer.

Chapter 51 — Shelter Residents Groan

Several of the shelter residents groan. The floor’s NPC population in this zone — the Homestead area — has been affected by something Carl and the group have done or are about to do. The shelter itself becomes a location of significance.

Chapter 52 — Club Vanquisher Again, Katia’s Crown

Back in Club Vanquisher: the death of Anton weighs on Carl, along with Sister Ines stabbing Paz with the team flag. Anton is dead. Paz has been stabbed. And “the revelation that Katia had the Crown of the Sepsis Whore on her head. It was too much.” — three catastrophes registering simultaneously. Carl forces himself to keep moving. The guard at Club Vanquisher is admiring himself in a mirror. Yasmine the Wisp tells Carl he can’t block the portal. Pater Coal pulls Carl aside: “We need to get you to the healer. Quickly.”

Chapter 53 — Racing to the Church, Samantha and the Motorcycle

Carl and Donut race toward the church in Guanajay on a Harley Davidson that Carl has repaired and Katia has tuned up. Donut considers the motorcycle to be a metallic penis extension that “comes with a free probation officer and a traumatic brain injury.” Samantha is lashed to the handlebars, squealing happily. They need to get to the church and Quan before Sister Ines does — if Quan gets the key first, he goes to Floor 9 and the situation becomes unrecoverable.

Chapter 54 — Crawler Priestly, 14th Edition

Note Added by Crawler Priestly, 14th Edition: “Stab, stab, stab. It is all I know.” Priestly writes at the end of Faction Wars, knowing the orcs will win. He won’t march into Larracos with eyes closed. His subsequent note — which Crawler Drakea advises readers to skip — documents his final hours. He doesn’t make it to the battle. “I hope there is music, in the end.” Drakea’s addendum: “Fuck them all.”

Chapter 55 — Crawler Porthus, 2nd Edition

Note added by Crawler Porthus, Second Edition: The oldest archived note yet again. Porthus documents the difference between ghost-possession and evicted demon inhabitation — technically critical information about how to deal with the demon Amayon. Porthus: “Kill it with fire. Destroy the head. Do not, under any circumstances, attempt to teleport a shell possessed by an evicted demon.” The chapter also shows Carl’s active deck for the card battle that’s coming.

Chapter 56 — Several Days Earlier

“Several Days Earlier.” The narrative shifts to a flashback — filling in events that explain how the current crisis reached this state. Something happened before this chapter that the narrative hadn’t shown.

Chapter 57 — Level Collapse Timer

“Time until level collapse:” — the clock is running out. The flashback portion rejoins the present, and the collapse is imminent.

Chapter 58 — Spider Automaton Crushed, Teleporting

The spider automaton is crushed under Carl’s weight as he teleports atop it. Three other similar confrontations happen simultaneously or in sequence. Carl is fighting multiple automated dungeon defenders while moving toward the final objective.

Chapter 59 — Horror Flashes Across Ren’s Face

“The horror flashed across Ren’s face as the implications of it…” Ren — a crawler — realizes what Carl’s plan means. For them, or for others. The horror is not at Carl specifically but at the situation they’re now in together.

Chapter 60 — More Inventory Than Carl

Someone has more crap in their inventory than Carl, which is notable. They carry a ton of magical gear. The meeting involves some logistical planning around their combined resources.

Chapters 61-64 — Crawler Notes: Milk, Herot, Milk, Allister

A cluster of crawler documentation covering:

  • Stairwells (Milk and Herot): The stairwells are indestructible. The only way to advance floors is via stairwell. No portal hacks. No skipping.
  • Rosetta’s Account: The Faction Wars victory, the portal to the nightclub, the crawler cut in half, the survivors watching the victors celebrate from outside the glass.
  • The AI’s instability (Herot): “The more unstable the AI running this system becomes, the less predictable it is. Yet at the same time, it’s even more predictable.” The AI is listening. It grants quests based on conversations. It is changing.
  • Allister on Ysalte: The Semeru Dwarves of Floor 9 worship a single goddess who appears near the end of Faction Wars. She is hated by gods and demons. She is known as the Downward Spiral, or the Vinegar Bitch. She’s the daughter/sister/mother of the great centipede, depending on who you ask. Allister has never heard of a crawler worshipping her.

Chapter 65 — “Donut, Get Your Headset On”

One hour left. Carl whispers: “Donut, get your headset on and get ready to cast your spell.” Samantha will enhance it. Invisibility potions for those going in the front. Donut positions at the alley edge in a taxi bike basket, just her eyes visible. She’s about to cast a spell that will turn 2% of the enemy demon force against each other — a war spell she’s been carrying since Floor 1 and never used because it roots her in place for four minutes. With Imani and Samantha enhancing, the percentage increases to ~5%. Mordecai says 5% will create utter chaos. He hopes.

Chapter 66 — The Goddess Ysalte, Level 250

“In the presence of a deity.” The Goddess of Hopelessness and Insanity Ysalte — the Vinegar Bitch — appears. She is Level 250. She is sponsored by Pontifex Shine. All potions held outside inventory turn to vinegar in her presence. She fills with power as her corpse-predecessor dissolves. She is invulnerable on this floor. Her story is long and sad: half-sister and niece to her former lover Taranis, she fled to Sheol after being threatened with the Nothing by Apito, and has since returned to the Halls of Ascendency where she is feared and reviled. She is not considered someone who wants to lead. That makes her dangerous.

Chapter 67 — Card Battle Begins: Amayon and Ysalte

A graphic appears at the bottom of the interface: a new mechanic showing all team card counts. Donut has 21, Katia and Li Na 20 each, Imani 15, Elle 22. Six per deck are totem cards, glowing. Amayon — the enslaved demon lord — has six cards total. All totems.

The goal: attack Amayon’s six totems to free him (freeing him allows conversation). Defend against Ysalte without running her deck dry — the moment her deck empties, she can cast a spell that destroys everyone. Maintain this balance for ten minutes.

Five against two. “You got this?” Carl asks Donut. “I am the current reigning champion Persian cat in the galaxy. I have received more trophies and purple ribbons than anyone alive. And most importantly, I am a warlord of the Princess Posse Faction Wars team. Yes, Carl. I got this.”

Chapter 68 — Carl Leaps off the Building, Samantha Flies

The world unfreezes. Carl bolts toward the edge of the building and leaps. He catches Samantha in midair as they both drop. Demon seagulls pursue. They plummet past battle totems. Carl clutches Samantha’s pigtails like handlebars. Amayon — the demon lord — is a kaiju-sized creature with centaur pig-legs and cloven hooves each ten feet tall, stinking of scorched barnyard. Carl runs underneath him between his legs. Black liquid rains down. Li Na summons a dragon. Carl needs to reach the beach.

Chapter 69 — Headfirst Inside Samantha

Carl puts his head inside Samantha’s neck hole. His Floor-8-specific ability: if he drops below 5% health, Martyr’s Path activates, releasing Sheol fire across all his footsteps outdoors. Since he ran under the demon, this Sheol fire would enhance the demon’s power — possibly enough. Carl needs to get to 5% health while inside Samantha. The acid inside her burns his face. He watches his health drop. He needs 5%. He gets to 7%. The timer runs out. He has failed.

He mentally clicks the button that appears in his interface with all the force he has.

Chapters 70-72 — Resolution, Aftermath

Carl’s improvised fall-back plan triggers. The card battle resolves. Ysalte is dealt with in the dungeon’s terms — not killed (she’s invulnerable) but her deck is managed and the ten-minute window survives. Amayon is freed from his enslavement. Carl finds himself in Louis’s arms as they run through the city. Something major has shifted.

The stairwell is reached. Floor 8 ends.

What This Book Does

The Eye of the Bedlam Bride is the series’ most emotionally dense book. Anton’s death, Paz’s betrayal, Katia’s crown, Samantha’s first appearance, Bea’s mother, Ysalte’s arrival, Priestly’s final notes — it layers losses and revelations at a pace that doesn’t give Carl time to process each one before the next arrives. The crawler notes reach their most emotionally significant entries here: Rosetta watching the orc cut a crawler in half through the glass is the series’ darkest moment in the archive so far.

Carl writing his own note as “Crawler Carl, 25th Edition” is the book’s most quietly significant beat. It means he lives long enough to become an archivist. It means he chooses to look back. Whether the note tells future crawlers to be better or just to be careful, he wrote it. That matters.

Samantha is the book’s unexpected joy: a floating head who thinks motorcycles make a pleasant tingle and eats bugs out of Carl’s hand. She is deeply weird and genuinely delightful.
