The Gate of the Feral Gods
Background
The fifth floor is called The Bubbles — a vast underwater ocean environment where hundreds of large bubble-like domes contain entire self-contained biomes, ruins, settlements, and creatures. The floor has a 15-day countdown. Views have reached 1.43 Quintillion; Followers 7 Quadrillion. Carl is ranked #3 on the global leaderboard with an 800,000-gold bounty on his head. Of the entire Earth population that started the dungeon, only 178,887 crawlers remain.
The floor’s title refers to its imprisoned bosses: massive ancient creatures (Feral Gods) trapped inside the bubbles — Orthrus (a two-headed giant puppy dog), Lusca (a monstrous octo-shark mother), Quetzalcoatlus, and others. These are not standard bosses. They are god-tier entities that the dungeon is using as floor centerpieces.
Key characters introduced: Juice Box (a crawler), Henrik (Juice Box’s brother, a changeling who can shapeshift), Commandant Kane (a military NPC), Gwen, Tran, Vadim, Britney (survivor who provides intel on the underwater zone), Quan (an antagonist crawler with celestial-tier gear). Kevin and Magnificent Troy are announced as viewing hosts.
Chapter 22 — Pre-Floor Recap, “Mailing List! Patreon!”
The standard broadcast recap covers Floor 4’s events. The title of the floor — The Bubbles — is announced. Stats roll: 1.43 Quintillion views, 7 Quadrillion followers, Leaderboard Rank #3. The bubble map shows Carl entering Bubble #543 out of 11,000+. The Krakaren crisis footage drew record galaxy-wide viewership.
Chapter 2 — Donut Gets Her Spellbook, Mailbox Prize
The first thing Donut does is bounce over to the mailbox and grab her spellbook-of-the-floor club prize. The spellbook contains a new spell or ability that she immediately begins practicing. Carl reviews his stats and the floor overview. The Bubbles are organized differently from previous floors — there are no standard neighborhoods, just individual contained ecosystems.
Chapter 3 — Planning: Find the Others, Stage 1
“Here’s what we gotta do,” Carl says after finishing his training. Step one: find the other crawlers in this bubble and assess the situation. Stage 1 of 4 begins: The Gnomes. The bubble Carl has entered contains a gnome settlement, and the gnomes are one of the dungeon’s more irritating monster types — organized, crafty, and disproportionately troublesome relative to their individual power level.
Chapter 4 — Building the Vehicle
Carl begins building the floor’s primary vehicle: a rickety, compartmental flying machine (an early aircraft). The engineering and metalworking skills he’s accumulated allow him to assemble this contraption from scavenged materials. It barely works. Katia examines it with visible distress and makes several improvements. The vehicle will eventually matter a great deal.
Chapter 5 — The Stage Announcement
The announcement came and went. Stage 1 of the floor — the gnome phase — is officially active. The dungeon has given them a set of objectives; completing them advances the stage counter toward Stage 4 and the floor’s central bosses.
Chapter 6 — Two Suns, The Bubble’s Sky
The pale sun rises rapidly across the sky, closing in on the larger yellow sun. Inside the bubbles, the sky is simulated — light sources that move on a schedule, creating a day/night cycle. The two-sun configuration is a visual tell that this bubble’s ecosystem doesn’t match anything from Earth.
Chapter 7 — Total, Utter Failure
“Total, Utter Failure.” Carl’s first approach to Stage 1 doesn’t work the way he planned. The gnome setup in this bubble is more complex than Mordecai had indicated. Carl revises his approach.
Chapter 8 — Timer 13 Days 13 Hours; Gnome Tactics
“Time to Level Collapse: 13 days, 13 hours.” With time on his side, Carl systematically approaches the gnome settlement. He maps their patrol routes, identifies the stage objectives, and begins the process of working through Stage 1’s requirements.
Chapter 9 — Stealing from Skarn
A small part of Carl feels bad about stealing from little Skarn and his burgeoning “charge people to look at things” business. Skarn is a gnome NPC who has set up a sort of tourist attraction in the ruins. Carl takes what he needs. The achievement notification for stealing from an NPC with a legitimate business has a tone of mild reproach.
Chapter 10 — Stage 2 of 4, Still on the Gnomes
Stage 2 of 4: still on the gnomes. The stage counter advancing does not mean the gnomes are finished — Stage 2 continues in the same environment but escalates the challenge. Carl and Katia are working the edges of the gnome territory while Donut practices her new spells.
Chapter 11 — Crafting Room, Loot Boxes
With Donut in the crafting room, Carl opens his new loot boxes. He receives items suited to an underwater/multi-environment floor. The crafting room’s equipment is more sophisticated than what was available on earlier floors.
Chapter 12 — The Message to Commandant Kane
The message Carl had Henrik deliver to Commandant Kane: a strategic communication that initiates a quest chain involving the floor’s military-themed NPCs. Henrik’s changeling ability (perfect shapeshifting) makes him valuable as a messenger and infiltrator.
Chapter 13 — Back at Bactrian Ruins, Hump Town
Back with the others in the Bactrian ruins, the group limps their way back to Hump Town. The Bactrian ruins are a camel-themed archaeological site inside one of the bubbles. Hump Town is the closest settlement. Dozens of something — birds or flying creatures — patrol above. The group’s injuries are significant.
Chapter 14 — The Level-35 Creature, Children Move Off
Carl looks up at the level-35 creature as the children all move away. The creature towers over him, standing at a height that makes Carl feel very small. The level 35 designation means it’s significantly higher than Carl’s current level — this is not a fight Carl wins directly, which means he needs to think.
Chapter 15 — “Henrik Is Your Brother?” Juice Box Revelation
“Henrik is your brother?” Carl asks Juice Box. The connection between the changeling principal Henrik and the crawler Juice Box isn’t one Carl expected. This establishes that Henrik has a personal stake in the floor’s events beyond his NPC function. It also complicates what happens to Henrik later.
Chapter 16 — The Small Girl, White Dot on the Map
Carl examines the small girl’s properties. Her dot is white on the map — white means non-hostile, or more specifically, means she’s not considered an enemy. Who she is and why she matters will become clear as the floor’s quest chain develops.
Chapter 17 — Stage 3 of 4: The Mad Dune Mage
Stage 3 of 4: The Mad Dune Mage. The stage shifts from gnome territory into a desert section of the bubble with a powerful NPC mage as the challenge. The Mad Dune Mage has area-denial abilities that make direct approach dangerous. Carl’s approach involves the vehicle and a lot of creative use of terrain.
Chapter 18 — Crawler Coolie’s Note (#19)
Note added by Crawler Coolie, 19th Edition: The floor has begun generating in-world documentation — notes left by previous crawlers (from earlier editions of this crawl) that have been compiled into an archive accessible to current crawlers. This is the first appearance of the crawler-note format that will become more prevalent later in the series. Coolie’s note is advice about the dungeon’s behavior at this stage.
Chapter 19 — Repair Subs, Moving Fast
The repair subs take about thirty seconds to mend the damage. The moment the vehicle is fixed, Donut and someone scramble aboard. Carl is operating in the underwater sections of the bubble now — repair drones are part of the infrastructure of the Bubbles floor’s built-in systems.
Chapter 20 — Timer 4 Days 22 Hours; Stage Review
“Time to Level Collapse: 4 Days and 22 Hours.” Stage 3 is complete. Stage 4 is next: The Necropolis of Anser. Carl’s group reviews their current status, levels, and preparations before entering the final stage of the floor.
Chapter 21 — Katia Through the Electrified Doorway
Mongo and Carl scramble after Katia through the electrified doorway into the hallway. The Necropolis is partially submerged, and accessing its interior requires navigating electrified barriers that Katia’s body modification makes easier to pass.
Chapter 22 — Peering Down the Stairs
Carl peers down the stairs. The Necropolis of Anser is deep, floored with water, and its lower levels are fully submerged. Down there is the chamber where the floor’s last significant bosses are active.
Chapter 23 — Stage 4 of 4: The Necropolis of Anser
Stage 4 of 4: The Necropolis of Anser. The final stage. The Necropolis is the floor’s major dungeon-within-a-dungeon: a vast underwater crypt built around the remains of an ancient civilization that worshipped sea gods. The Feral God Lusca is here, along with her juvenile Octo-Sharks.
Chapter 24 — Before Katia Could Answer, Submarine Discovery
Before Katia can answer Carl, they discover the submarine: an abandoned vessel inside the Necropolis, which turns out to contain the bodies of Henrik and six other changeling principals. They came here for something and failed. Henrik’s body contains the pocket watch Carl needs.
Chapter 25 — Setting the Alarm, Finding Henrik
Carl sets off the alarm in hopes Henrik will respond — but Henrik is dead. Carl has to find his body, get the pocket watch back, and get out before the Necropolis’s defenses reset. The watch is the key to a larger quest that spans multiple floors.
Chapter 26 — Boss Music, Submarine Rolls
As music starts to pulse through the bridge, the hull shudders. The submarine is seized by something enormous. Boss music means boss fight. Carl grabs the bodies, loots Henrik, tries to get everyone into the portal before Lusca fully activates. Carl texts Katia, who has fled into the submarine instead of getting out. Vadim takes the only escape pod and abandons them.
Boss fight: The submarine rolls onto its side. Outside every window: thousands of Juvenile Octo-Sharks (Level 30 Minions of Lusca), each with a round mouth full of teeth like a bicycle wheel, ten feet long from mouth to tentacle tip. The submarine is inside Lusca’s mouth.
Chapter 27 — Kevin Shouts, World Unfreezes, Octo-Sharks
“And here we go!” Kevin shouts as the world unfreezes and the timer starts. The Octo-Shark babies are pressed against every window. Carl has torches and Katia. Vadim is gone with the escape pod. Magnificent Troy and Kevin commentate from a floating broadcast window inside the bridge. Carl fights while reading Lusca’s tooltip (“their odds of survival are better than yours!”). He survives using the final escape route he identified before the fight activated.
Chapter 28 — Timer 3 Days 20 Hours; Britney’s Intel
“Time to level collapse: 3 Days, 20 hours.” The group surfaces from the Necropolis. Carl and the team debrief with Britney — a human survivor who was outside the collapse area (getting “before photos” for a surgery) and has specific knowledge about the underwater section. Britney: “I’m not going back down there.” Donut eats raspberry gelato and admires her furs.
Chapter 29 — The Storm, Orthrus Fills the Sky
“The storm is already starting to blow.” Lightning is coming. Carl exits the personal space with Katia, Gwen, and Tran into a night of howling wind. He checks the boss map. He sees the orange star for Orthrus. Then he actually sees Orthrus.
The creature fills almost half the available space of the bubble. Two massive fuzzy legs erupt from the water. Its belly smooshes against the side of the Necropolis. Its front paws are draped over the bubble’s rim. The twin undescended lumps where its testicles will be are each the size of domed sports arenas — indicating it’s still a puppy. It is wagging its tail. A mournful whimper fills the night.
A second whimper joins it. Two heads. Two howls.
Chapter 30 — Quan Attacks Orthrus; Carl Joins Emberus
Carl has Quan on his chat. Quan — a hostile crawler with a celestial-tier flying robe that gives him flight, lightning attacks, and a shield — wants the prize for killing the Giant Feral God. Carl tells Quan he’ll kill them if Quan hurts the dog. Quan: “Sorry, but it’s too good of a prize.”
Meanwhile, during the frantic fight to reach Orthrus, Carl has joined a religion. He sees a shrine and impulsively commits to worshipping Emberus — a sun god. Twin sun tattoos appear on both his hands: one with curled rays, one with triangles. Both glow orange.
Carl uses Donut’s Magic Missile combined with Mordecai’s special brew potion to assault Quan. Donut hits Quan in the back. His shield flickers. It doesn’t go down. He grins.
Chapter 31 — Quan, the Robe, and Mordecai’s Brew
Carl has Quan on chat: “I said he’d kill us if he hurt the dog, and he said, ‘Sorry, but it’s too good of a prize. Plus, if I get that fucking cat in the process it’d be a bonus.’” Donut, who has mentioned her hatred of the “cheater” Quan approximately twenty times since he got celestial gear at the end of Floor 3, is now actively engaged. Carl uses the combined potion. The resolution of the Quan confrontation takes Carl to the edge of what he can currently do, and it involves the now-running aircraft, the dog, and an improvised approach that nobody planned and everyone executes anyway.
Chapter 32 — Crawler Note: Justice Light (#8), Carl’s New Tattoos
Note by Crawler Justice Light, 8th Edition: A skyfowl crawler killed an NPC shopkeeper in a trap shop because of an insult, losing the entire supply chain for the floor. “Killing of these innocents should be kept to a minimum, unless absolutely necessary.” A second entry adds that Justice Light is gone, and the world is “still too hot.”
Carl and Donut discuss his sun tattoos. Donut: “With your new jacket and bandana and tattoos, you look like someone whose picture gets put on the news because he did something involving indecent exposure and a Wal-Mart.” A shrine to Emberus has appeared in the safe room. Mordecai’s reaction is one word. Donut: “CARL DID IT.”
Chapter 33 — Crawler Note: Priestly (#14)
Note from Crawler Priestly, 14th Edition: Additional in-universe documentation about the dungeon’s current floor mechanics, specifically regarding the interaction between crawler-available crafting and the god-worship system. The notes are presented as a living document that accumulates wisdom from multiple editions of the Earth crawl — implying this isn’t the first time this has happened.
Chapter 34 — Crawler Note: Porthus (#2), Floor Ends
Note added by Crawler Porthus, 2nd Edition: The earliest archived entry yet — from only the second time Earth has run this crawl. The oldest note in the archive. The floor collapses. Carl, Donut, and the surviving group descend to Floor 6.
What This Book Does
The Gate of the Feral Gods is the series’ first book with a genuinely god-scale threat. Orthrus is not a boss in the traditional sense — it’s a puppy the size of a city block, and the reason Carl refuses to let Quan kill it is not strategic but emotional. The dungeon keeps forcing Carl to confront that some of the things it generates are worth protecting.
The crawler notes format (chapters 32-34) introduces the idea that there is history to this dungeon — Earth has been through this before, in earlier editions, and those crawlers left records. Carl is not the first person to deal with this. The question of whether he can use that knowledge is one the series will keep returning to.
Carl’s religion (Emberus, the sun god with twin tattoos and unexplained obligations) is not a choice he made carefully. It’s something he did in a crisis and will have to live with. This will recur.
