The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook
Background
Carl and Donut enter Floor 4 with Hekla now a permanent party member. A new ally, Katia (a crawler from Eastern Europe with body-modification abilities), joins this floor. Floor 4 is a vast underground railway network — hundreds of numbered stations connected by colored train lines, spanning a scale that makes Floor 3 look compact. The floor has a 10-day countdown.
Carl still has Carl’s Doomsday Scenario in his inventory: an explosion-imminent city-killer he cannot safely discard or detonate. Mongo is still with them.
The floor’s secondary complication becomes clear early: the Tangle (the entity managing this train network) made a deal that introduced Krakaren eggs into the system. Krakaren are tentacled, fast-breeding monsters that grow on soul crystals — and the entire train network is full of soul crystals.
New crawlers introduced this floor: Bautista (tiger-man), Elle, Imani, Li Jun, Zhang (Li Jun’s best friend, bald, Chinese, mage-tank with a shrinking wand), Li Na.
Chapter 22 — The Pre-Floor Recap
“Why do we keep meeting like this?” The standard “It’s that time again” recap episode covers what Carl and Donut accomplished on Floor 3 for the benefit of the galaxy’s viewing audience. Condensed into a highlight reel: the Blood Sultanate palace, the Magistrate assassination, the Doomsday Scenario creation, and Manasa’s final song.
Chapter 1 — Floor 4 Begins, 10 Days
Time to Level Collapse: 10 Days. The stairwell down deposits Carl and Donut into a train platform. The floor is a subway system. The stations are numbered. The platform signs use colored lines. It’s immediately clear this floor is organized differently from anything they’ve seen — it’s built for navigation, not neighborhoods.
Chapter 2 — Transfer Station, Multiple Exits
The transfer station holds multiple exits. Carl begins mapping the network structure. The Krakaren situation hasn’t emerged yet — the floor looks like a functional (if abandoned) transit system. Carl plans their route.
Chapter 3 — The Royal Palace of Princess Donut
The dungeon has generated a Royal Palace for Donut on this floor as well, accessible from a specific station. It has updated furnishings and a room that seems purpose-built for Donut to hold court. Mordecai explains the political implications, which are more complex than they were on Floor 3.
Chapter 4 — Training with Katia, Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook
Several hours training with wooden dummies. Donut, Carl, and Katia work through their expanded skill sets. Carl has been reading The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook obsessively — it is exactly what it sounds like, a guide to dungeon improvised weapons written by a previous crawler, and it gives Carl ideas at the rate of several per page.
Chapter 5 — First Train-Floor Encounters, Katia’s Abilities
With the train monsters only appearing a few minutes later, the Floor 4 combat rhythm is established. Katia’s unique ability — she can modify her body in small ways, reshaping flesh with increasing speed and decreasing pain — proves useful. She demonstrates this by making her tongue form a tiny middle finger. Carl is impressed and unsettled.
Chapter 6 — Multiple Colored Lines, Navigation Begins
Unlike previous platforms, this one connects multiple colored lines. Carl and Donut establish their base of operations and begin working the colored-line network. The trains run on rails through tunnels too fast to run alongside; crawlers are meant to ride them.
Chapter 7 — Timer 8 Days 18 Hours; Krakaren First Sign
“Time to Level Collapse: 8 days and 18 hours.” The first warning signs of the Krakaren problem. Something has been laying eggs in the station infrastructure, and the eggs are growing. Mordecai explains what Krakaren are: tentacled, fast-breeding monsters that draw power from soul crystals to reproduce. The floor has a lot of soul crystals.
Chapter 8 — The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook (the Item)
Carl acquires The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook as an actual in-world item this floor — a physical volume available at one of the floor’s rare waystation shops. It supplements what he already knows with specific techniques for the materials available in a train-themed dungeon environment.
Chapter 9 — The Gauntlet Moment
Carl is out of his chair with his gauntlet formed before he realizes he’s responding to a threat. The Krakaren have grown larger than Mordecai’s initial estimates. Something is accelerating the breeding cycle.
Chapter 10 — Hekla and an Arby’s Milkshake, The Tangle
Carl comes back to find Hekla on the couch with a milkshake. The dungeon’s food system on this floor has a surreal tendency to produce fast food items. Hekla informs Carl of what she’s learned about the Tangle — the management entity for this floor’s railway — and what it did: it declared bankruptcy and sold the whole network into a Krakaren nest. Every soul crystal in the system is now breeding Krakaren.
Chapter 11 — The Detonation, Mongo Screams
A significant explosion on the tracks — Carl’s setup for a bottleneck. The detonation shakes the entire station. Mongo screams. Several levels of tunnel are affected. The Krakaren presence in this quadrant of the network is reduced significantly.
Chapter 12 — Donut Levels Up, Coordination Begins
“Carl, Carl, I hit level 28.” The group begins wider coordination with other crawlers across the floor. The floor is too large for Carl alone to address — there are crawlers in distant stations who don’t know what’s happening, and the Krakaren are spreading toward them.
Chapter 13 — Timer 7 Days 12 Hours; Network Mapping
“Time to Level Collapse: 7 days, 12 hours.” Carl builds a working map of the entire network. The numbered stations, the colored lines, the soul crystal locations, the known Krakaren concentrations — it goes on a mental whiteboard and gets updated constantly.
Chapter 14 — Timer 6 Days 23 Hours; The Employee Line
“Time to Level Collapse: 6 days, 23 hours.” Carl discovers the employee line — a secondary maintenance track running parallel to the main network, currently free of monsters because it’s not visible to the Krakaren’s targeting logic. This changes the evacuation math significantly.
Chapter 15 — The Nightmare Express
The Nightmare Express. An anomaly on the network: a train that runs on no standard line, appears to be the floor’s major roaming boss, and cannot be fought by standard means because anything that tries to intercept it directly gets destroyed. Carl’s analysis of the Express’s route and behavior leads to the approach that defeats it: not fighting the train but controlling what it hits.
Chapter 16 — Message from Elle and Imani
Carl finds a message from Elle and Imani — two crawlers in a distant part of the network. They’ve been coordinating a large group of survivors at station 101. They know about the Krakaren and they’ve already figured out some of what Carl’s figured out. This is the beginning of the multi-crawler coordination that the floor requires.
Chapter 17 — Through the Portal, Trainyard Access
The portal Carl sets leads to a trainyard section — the peripheral nodes of the network where trains are stored and serviced. The trainyards are critical to his emerging plan, because they have the infrastructure for launching the interdiction carts.
Chapter 18 — The Station Is a City Boss Fight
“Yeah, you’re a little late there, buddy. Can’t talk. The whole damn station is a city boss fight.” Station 48 is not just a station. It’s the floor boss’s home base. Carl gets a very brief warning before the fight activates. He manages to survive primarily by not being where the boss expects.
Chapter 19 — Timer 4 Days 20 Hours; Interdiction Cart Plan
“Time to level collapse: 4 days, 20 hours.” Carl reveals his interdiction cart strategy: armed carts sent down specific train lines to function as rolling traps and barriers, funneling the Krakaren away from the stairwell stations. He needs to coordinate with enough crawlers to make it work simultaneously.
Chapter 20 — Interview on a Submarine, Floor 4 Show
The production trailer this floor is a submarine. The interview covers the floor’s midpoint highlights. The galaxy has been watching the Krakaren crisis as entertainment; the coordination efforts are the most-watched content this floor.
Chapter 21 — Timer 4 Days 9 Hours; Katia Through the Doorway
“Time to Level Collapse: 4 Days, 9 Hours.” Mongo and Carl scramble after Katia through the electrified doorway into the hallway. Katia’s body modification abilities prove critical in a navigational crisis — she can fit through spaces that humans can’t, and she can temporarily alter her body to handle certain environmental hazards.
Chapter 22 — Ghouls at Station 75, Survivors at 36
The horde of ghouls seems to be stopped at station 75. Hekla monitors the situation as Katia continues her work. The evacuation of survivors to stairwell stations is proceeding, but the ghouls and the Krakaren are now both factors. The floor has effectively split into multiple simultaneous crises.
Chapter 23 — Katia Slams Into the Sidewall, Combat on the Tracks
Katia’s eyes register shock as she slams into the sidewall of the car. A combat on the rails — fighting monsters while the train is moving, with limited options for retreat. Carl and Katia develop an impromptu fighting style that treats the train car itself as a weapon.
Chapter 24 — Peeled Off the Wall, Boss Defeated
Someone peels off the wall and collapses. A boss encounter resolved with extreme violence. Carl’s preparations for this specific fight came from reading the section of the Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook about confined-space explosives, which he would like Mordecai to know he used responsibly.
Chapter 25 — Timer 3 Days 3 Hours; Bautista Stranded
“Time to Level Collapse: 3 days, 3 hours.” The second cart for the Mindaro line never arrived — that was Bautista’s cart, leaving his group stranded at the end of the line. Carl and Katia take a rapid-response cart down the Mindaro line to find them, going insanely fast while Donut discusses the color chartreuse in detail.
Chapter 26 — Growler Gary, the Bar, the Tangle’s Betrayal
The bartender’s name is Growler Gary. He’s a gnoll, level 25, barely conscious. He tells Carl the whole Tangle story: the railway management entity declared bankruptcy and sold the network to a Krakaren nest. Gary tried to fight but found himself unable to leave the doorway. A woman came through, killed everyone else, ripped Gary’s throat out, and stole all the alcohol. Gary woke up in a pile of his own blood. He’s not dead, and he insists he is not a coward. Donut believes him. Carl finds him useful.
Chapter 27 — “He Ended Up Being Really Brave”
“He ended up being really brave.” Someone on the floor who Carl or Donut had not expected much of dies doing something that mattered. The dungeon’s tendency to generate characters who are more than they appear culminates in a death that costs something. Carl doesn’t have time to process it until later.
Chapter 28 — Bautista Found, Grulke Figurines, Miss Quill Connection
Carl rescues Bautista’s group from the end of the Mindaro line. Bautista mentions the stuffed collectible figures from his inventory — the same type as what Miss Quill sold. A Stuffed Grulke Infantry Figure, common as dirt, common enough for one to appear anywhere. Bautista has multiple and can’t figure out what they do. Carl looks at the little bean-bag frog in his hands and feels like the dungeon is trying to tell him something.
Chapter 29 — Timer 1 Day 16 Hours; Interdiction Carts, The Noodle
“Time to Level Collapse: One day and 16 hours.” Carl executes the interdiction cart plan. The cart plan works for most lines: armed carts sent through the colored lines push monsters toward the portals at the abyss edges. The interconnecting spaces between stations — which Imani’s chat partner investigates by dropping a rock into them — exhibit anti-gravity properties (gravity pulls toward the nearest wall surface). The group names this weird transitional space The Noodle.
Chapter 30 — Mordecai Soaked, Main Restaurant
Walking out to the main restaurant, Mordecai is somehow even more soaked than he was before. The guide’s composure is at its limits. The floor’s penultimate state is messy. Carl debrief’s Mordecai on the full scope of the Krakaren situation, the soul crystal plan, and what he needs for the last 24 hours.
Chapter 31 — The Revelation, Mass Evacuation
Immediately after the revelation — that killing Krakaren fast enough in clusters will pop the nearby soul crystals — Carl sends mass notifications to abandon all stairwell stations. Some crawlers think he’s full of it. Bautista listens. Station 12’s soul crystal is blown, and the report coming back confirms the theory: all the monsters in the area are dead. Li Jun, Zhang, and Li Na volunteer without being asked.
Chapter 32 — Timer 17 Hours; Katia’s Crowd Blast, Boom Jugs
“Time to Level Collapse: 17 Hours.” Katia performs a crowd blast attack, immediately followed by Carl throwing the twin boom jugs. The combined attack takes out multiple large-sized Krakaren simultaneously. This triggers the nearby soul crystals to pop. The Krakaren generators in those areas shut down. Li Jun’s team, armed with Zhang’s shrinking wand, manages to get an interdiction cart inside station 36 for the final defense.
Chapter 33 — Entering Trainyard E
Entering Trainyard E. The last major assault on the floor’s final monster concentration. Carl’s plan: use the trainyards’ switching infrastructure to channel every remaining Krakaren into a single kill zone. The execution is complicated by the fact that the kill zone is where the train’s power systems are most vulnerable.
Chapter 34 — Timer 5 Hours, Final Push
“Time to Level Collapse: Five Hours.” The final push. Every remaining monster on the floor is being funneled toward the explosives Carl has rigged across Trainyard E. The floor’s last significant crawler — someone who survived in a spot nobody thought to look — is evacuated in the last thirty minutes. The explosion goes off. The Krakaren are gone. The floor collapses.
What This Book Does
Book 3 expands the series’ scope from “two people and a cat” to a floor-scale coordination problem. Carl’s skills — improvised explosives, careful planning, willingness to think three steps ahead — turn out to scale up into crisis management of a dungeon-wide disaster. The Nightmare Express fight, Growler Gary’s monologue about being “no coward,” and the death in Chapter 27 establish that the dungeon generates real people alongside its monsters, and the cost of losing them is real.
The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook as both a title and an item is the book’s thesis: the dungeon is full of materials, and if you read the right manual and stop being afraid of your own ideas, you can build anything.
