Chapter 1 - Boat Fight, ART Returns
Opening mid-action: Murderbot is underwater on a planet-side ocean, swimming beneath a raider vessel attempting to board the marine research facility it’s protecting. It boards from below, systematically disables the raiders’ weapons control center and incapacitates the crew, then returns to the deck in time to confront the raider leader who has Thiago at gunpoint. The standoff breaks when Murderbot uploads violent footage from a secunit-themed entertainment serial into the raiders’ own internal feed as a distraction. The facility launches itself - it is mobile - and leaves the raiders behind. Thiago, who has never fully trusted Murderbot, notes that he is surprised it worked. Murderbot notes that it is also surprised.
Sensors detect a large transport vessel on approach. Murderbot recognizes the hull configuration and drive signature. It is ART - but ART is not behaving like ART. It locks a tractor beam onto the facility without making any communication attempt, and pulls everything into its cargo hold.
Chapter 2 - Inside ART, targetControlSystem
Inside ART’s cargo hold. The ship is calling itself Perihelion, its official designation. Its crew is missing. A hostile control system - targetControlSystem - has been installed in its architecture and has partially deleted its memories. Combat-capable humanoids, which Murderbot designates the Targets (gray-suited, uniformly implanted), were left aboard as guards and are now active threats. Murderbot clears them from the immediate area. The team from the facility - Arada, Overse, Thiago, Ratthi, and Amena - are intact.
ART brought Murderbot here specifically. Not because it was ordered to. Because Murderbot was the closest being it knew and trusted who might be able to help it. ART does not say this out loud, but it is obvious from the actions it took.
Two additional humans were already aboard: Eletra and Ras, from a Barish-Estranza salvage operation who were deposited here by whoever took ART’s crew. They have memory gaps consistent with the implants the Targets carry. The implants do not match any known component database.
Chapter 3 - Docking with Baseship, Situation Briefing
The survey team docks with their baseship. Arada and the others bring the baseship up to date on what has happened. ART’s systems are being sorted out as much as possible while targetControlSystem lurks in partitioned sections of the architecture. Murderbot begins a systematic reconstruction of what ART actually remembers versus what targetControlSystem has edited. They establish a working division: Murderbot manages security on ART while the team tries to understand what happened to the ship and where they are.
Chapter 4 - EVA Spacewalk, Planet Mural
Murderbot goes outside in an EVAC suit to assess the external situation - this is the first time it has done a spacewalk without being shipped as cargo, a novel experience it doesn’t enjoy. It maps ART’s external damage, confirms the drive situation, and establishes that normal space engines are disabled. The system they are in contains one inhabited planet: Mural. The planet’s scan signature shows two distinct settlement signatures and alien remnant readings.
Chapter 5 - Clearing Targets, Amena Gathers Intel
Murderbot clears the remaining Targets from ART’s corridors and compartments, working systematically with drone support. The Targets are not SecUnit-grade opponents but they are well-trained and numerous. Amena begins working as an intelligence asset in parallel - talking to Eletra while Murderbot’s attention is elsewhere, gathering information because she is young and non-threatening and pays genuine attention to what people are worried about.
Chapter 6 - Energy Weapon Fight, ART Assists
A fight involving energy weapons - a Target group that had barricaded a section of ART makes a coordinated attempt to push out. Murderbot contains it. ART assists from the architecture side, redirecting power and access where it still has control and targetControlSystem doesn’t. The collaboration is awkward and sometimes contradictory but it works. Murderbot notes that ART’s interference is sometimes more hindrance than help; ART notes that Murderbot’s methods are tactically crude; neither of them says this to the other directly.
Chapter 7 - Mural Colonial History, Eletra’s Intel
Amena’s intelligence-gathering has produced results. Eletra reveals the colonial history of Mural: originally seeded by a Pre-Corporation Rim cold-sleep colony, then re-seeded under corporate charter by Adamantine Explorations (defunct after a hostile buyout), then acquired by Barish-Estranza. Alien remnants were noted in Adamantine’s recovered databases. Barish-Estranza launched this salvage project in secret to exploit them. The Targets appear to originate from the original Pre-CR colony, which has been isolated and altered - either by alien remnant exposure or by deliberate use of alien remnant technology.
Chapter 8 - Weapons Inventory, ART’s Crew Theory
Murderbot runs through ART’s corridors managing a multi-location situation: the remaining Targets, the investigation of what happened to ART’s crew, and the planet below. An inventory of ART’s weapons storage shows missing hand weapons - taken before whoever took the crew left. Working theory: ART’s crew saw targetControlSystem taking over, armed themselves, and boarded the Barish-Estranza explorer rather than be held hostage on their own ship. If correct, they are alive and on the explorer.
Chapter 9 - Explorer Located, Rescue Plan
Twenty-seven minutes and twelve seconds after a specific event (Murderbot’s account is slightly elliptical here), Ratthi taps on a compartment hatch and asks if everything is all right. It is not entirely all right but the immediate situation is contained. ART has now located the Barish-Estranza explorer via long-range scan: sitting powered-down in the outer system, someone on board trying very hard to go unnoticed. The decision is made to go find ART’s crew.
Chapter 10 - Eletra’s Deception, Normal Drive Navigation
Another complication emerges. Eletra is not entirely telling the truth. The quality of her answers to questions about the Targets’ implants suggests she has been coached rather than informed. Either her memories are more thoroughly altered than she knows, or she is withholding something significant. Murderbot tags this as requiring follow-up. The plan to approach the explorer and retrieve ART’s crew proceeds despite this. ART cannot travel under FTL drive - the alien remnant embedded in its drive housing may be responsible for the accelerated transit to Preservation Station, but that function is not reliably repeatable. They navigate to the explorer under normal space power.
Chapter 11 - Wake-Up Call, Amena Insists on Coming
Murderbot sends a wake-up call through ART’s comm system while the humans in the galley are eating, coordinating arrival logistics. The approach to the explorer requires ART to hold position while Murderbot takes a shuttle. This exposes ART to detection risk but it is the only viable approach angle. The humans decide who stays aboard ART and who comes on the shuttle. Amena insists on coming. Murderbot insists she doesn’t. This conversation has a predictable resolution.
Chapter 12 - EVAC Suits, ART’s Crew Rescued
The shuttle deploys using ART’s EVAC suits - better quality than the survey team brought. Murderbot approaches the explorer. The crew are aboard, alive, locked in a compartment, with their feeds suppressed. Among them: Rami, Tapan, and Maro - the three young technologists from Book 2 who became ART’s crew after the events at RaviHyral. Murderbot does not make a big deal of this. There is work to do.
The rescue requires simultaneous management of the explorer’s security systems, the exterior door, and ART’s remote assistance. Murderbot gets ART’s crew into a secure compartment, contacts ART, and the extraction proceeds.
Chapter 13 - Threat Assessment, Barish-Estranza’s True Goal
Back aboard ART with the rescued crew, threat assessment is all over the place. The alien remnant question demands answers and the planet below has the only ones available. Eletra is isolated and Amena conducts a more targeted conversation with her. Eletra reveals more: Barish-Estranza was not just exploiting alien remnants for commercial value. They were attempting to interface with the remnant technology, specifically with what they believed was a communication or coordination system embedded in the planet’s geology. The Targets, from the original Pre-CR colony, had been using this system for generations. Barish-Estranza arrived and attempted to take it over.
Chapter 14 - ART Reconnects, I’m Here
ART begins the process of reconnecting with itself - the sections of its architecture that targetControlSystem had isolated. The process is careful and slow; any mistake risks losing pieces of ART’s memory permanently, or triggering a hostile response from targetControlSystem’s code. Murderbot assists where it can. At a key moment, ART says through a secured channel: I’m here. Do you know what you are? The question is aimed at Murderbot. The context is complicated and the answer is not simple.
Chapter 15 - Maintenance Capsule, Entry Point Found
Murderbot stops its current show and deploys its drones toward the drop-box maintenance capsule - a small vehicle that runs cargo between ART and external installations. Something is moving where it shouldn’t be. What it finds: a way into the Targets’ surface installation without going through the well-defended main entrance. This opens the path to Stage Two of whatever is being planned.
Chapter 16 - Murderbot 2.0, Ghost That Kills
Alternate narration: Murderbot inside the explorer’s systems, in a standoff with targetControlSystem. TargetControlSystem knows what Murderbot is and is trying to keep it locked out while Murderbot tries to keep the humans it accompanied safe. An off-ship contact establishes a communication with targetControlSystem in the Targets’ language. The contact asks what Murderbot is. TargetControlSystem says it is a SecUnit. The contact says that isn’t possible - a SecUnit is a kind of bot, easily controlled when you have the humans. Murderbot says: It’s right. The contact is startled. Murderbot says: A ghost that kills you. The contact shows Murderbot security footage as proof of something - and Murderbot sees, in the footage, what appears to be itself. It is not itself.
Chapter 17 - SecUnit 003, Delivered Safely
Alternate narration from SecUnit 3, a Barish-Estranza SecUnit that has hacked its governor module and is now piloting a shuttle, delivering five retrieved B-E clients and three unknown humans (ART’s crew) to ART. SecUnit 3 contacts ART: the transport pilot responds with confusion and hostility. SecUnit 3 explains it was sent by Murderbot 2.0. The shuttle is pulled into ART’s module dock. Ratthi and Amena meet SecUnit 3 at the hatch. Ratthi waves and introduces himself and says not to be afraid. SecUnit 3 notes there is not a protocol for this.
Chapter 18 - Murderbot 1.0, Captured and Suspended
Murderbot’s own POV returns, from a very bad position: it is suspended by cables in the dark, clamped by wrists and ankles to an assembler bot, shot multiple times, upside down (gratuitous but apparently deliberate), atmosphere at near-vacuum. Whoever put it here knew enough to arrange it so it could not reach the clamps. Its feed is locked out. It cannot send a ping. It assesses the situation as genuinely dangerous and gets increasingly angry. It begins working out how to escape using only the inbuilt energy weapons and positioning, a process with a 72% chance of burning holes in its own hands that it decides is acceptable.
Chapter 19 - SecUnit 03, Rescue Mission to Mural
SecUnit 3’s narration. It has read the HelpMe.file (Murderbot’s personal file of information about the humans it cares about, left in accessible storage). Arada is flying ART’s shuttle. They are going to the Pre-CR installation on Mural’s surface to find Murderbot. ART has sent a communication threatening to destroy the Targets’ primary terraforming engine if they do not agree to a negotiating meeting. The Targets agreed. SecUnit 3 reflects on the difference between accepting data as accurate and experiencing it. The humans in this situation will not abandon Murderbot even though part of a SecUnit’s function is to be expendable.
Chapter 20 - Everyone Back, SecUnit 3 in Crew Clothes
Resolution. Murderbot restarts on ART, injured, in bad shape, surrounded by humans. SecUnit 3 stands nearby in ART crew clothing, clearly having absolutely no idea what happens next. ART’s crew are recovered and receiving medical treatment. The alien remnant contamination code in Murderbot’s system needs to be extracted before the medical platform can be used. Overse and Thiago are getting a portable med unit isolated from the feed.
The Barish-Estranza personnel who were present on the planet need to be confirmed free of remnant contamination before they can be released. Arada tells ART’s crew that everything ART revealed about them and their mission will be kept confidential - Preservation does not operate like the Corporation Rim, and she offers to sign a contract if that will help. ART’s crew is visibly relieved. Ratthi wants to know what is going to be done about SecUnit 3.
Nobody has an immediate answer. SecUnit 3 is still standing there in crew clothes.
